The Making of the Glacial 1000

From the Making of Prospect Park

The Glacial 1000 was conceived by Kyle Obermann, a longtime trail runner and holder of multiple "vertical" records throughout Asia and Africa. In April 2025, Kyle reached out to David Alm, founder and race director of the East River 5000 series, to see if he'd like to collaborate on an unofficial, unsanctioned 10-mile trail race in Prospect Park that utilizes the park's extensive network of trails.

David, who's been running those trails for a quarter-century, didn't hesitate. He asked his friend Luke McCambley, aka the Orange Runner, to create a design for the event, and began to plan the race.

Layers and Layers of Trail

A Design Inspired by "The Spaghetti Bowl"

Luke's design features two humans trying to outrun a wooly mammoth, a sabre tooth tiger, and a polar bear, animals that inhabited the northeast during the last ice age 10,000 years ago. It was then that a glacier created the undulating landscape of Prospect Park, manicured and preserved by Frederick Law Olmsted in the 1860s.

The race is named for the 1000 feet of elevation runners gain over the course of the 10 miles. The basic rule of thumb for this course that, as Kyle says, "looks like a spaghetti bowl," is: If you see a trail, take it.
