Wow. What an incredible four days in sunny Glendale, Colorado. It seemed like yesterday the idea to hatch a scholarship to grow the game we love was just being discussed over a crisp Guinness.
The Taking Flight Scholarship is an extension of our approach to the game of rugby in America. It’s about growing the sport through youth rugby and making sure those who want that chance to be America’s next Eagle, get the chance to build upon quality opportunities to reach that goal.
Our first year yielded two winners. James Saddler and Darrin Curle – both are bright, talented and driven athletes who brought their enthusiasm to the Serevi Training Camp this past weekend. To top off two hot days training with Serevi pros at the edge of the Rockies, we were all treated to some spectacular sevens at the inaugural Serevi Rugbytown Sevens Tournament. Teams included the USA Falcons, All Americans, OPSB, Tiger Rugby, Serevi Selects, Chicago, Glendale and Samurai from the UK. Sitting out a quick and much needed thunderstorm, the American Falcons came out on top having to beat quality opposition to get there.
To finish the tournament, scholarship winners Darrin and James took to the field to meet with some of the Eagles themselves and personally thank some of the Serevi staff who worked with us to make this opportunity possible. A big thanks goes out to our partners!
The Taking Flight Scholarship is closed for 2012, but if you’re interested in applying, stay tuned here with us at Bakline for announcements about the latest camps in 2013.
Congratulations to both Darrin and James! Keep ruckin fellas, you make us and your families proud!
